Kindergarten Science Experiment

Just how hot was September? Hot enough to melt crayons!

Mrs. Johnson's Kindergarten used the hot sunny days during September to do a science experiment with crayons. When talking about the weather for the day, the students were presented with crayons attached to a paper with the letter K taped to it and told we would place it out in the sun.

We made our hypothesis as to what would happen to the crayons before finding a sunny spot to place it outside. Throughout the day, we checked on our project to see what was happening. Excitement rippled throughout the class as we began to see the crayons start to sweat and slowly begin to drip colorful wax down the paper.

Due to the heat of the sun's rays beaming down, the crayons would heat up and melt at different rates due to the pigment in the crayons. The darker colors, such as purple, melted faster and more thoroughly than the lighter colors, due to the absorption of heat from the sun.
